It usually helps to rest your hand, palm facing down, against a table or counter to steady it, so you don’t have to worry about the bracelet falling. When you place the bracelet on your wrist, center the feather panel on top of your wrist. Have the end without the clasp on the inside of your wrist closest to your thumb and pull the other end with the clasp around the outside and under to wrap it around your wrist.
INSIDE TIP: When you’re placing the bracelet on your hand, avoid setting it down so the end is right in the middle of your wrist because it’s more likely to fall off in that position. Set it down so the end of the bracelet is near the end of your wrist, closest to the other hand.
Place a piece of tape over the bracelet. Make sure to use a large enough piece of tape to firmly secure the jewelry to your wrist. It’s best to place the tape just behind the end of the bracelet, so that part is especially secure.
INSIDE TIP: You can use any type of tape that you have at home, but try to find an option that won’t leave any residue behind on your bracelet or tear at your skin when you peel it off. Basic invisible tape, such as Scotch Tape, actually works best for this purpose.
Secure the clasp with your free hand. With the tape holding the bracelet in place against your wrist, you can easily wrap the bracelet around your wrist and close the clasp with your opposite hand. Once the bracelet is secure, simply pull off the tape and discard.
INSIDE TIP: If you’re having any trouble closing the clasp, make sure to keep the hand that you’re putting the jewelry on braced against the table or counter so it remains steady.
Bend a paperclip to open it. Use your fingers to gently pry it apart and completely unbend it so only one “hook” remains. It’s important to choose a paper clip that’s large enough. When you unbend it, it should be long enough that you can create at least one hook that reaches your wrist while you’re holding it between your fingers.
INSIDE TIP: If you don’t have a paper clip of the right size at home, you can use other common household items such as a bobby pin or picture hanging wire that you can shape to use as a hook.
Hook your chosen tool through the end of the bracelet. You want to slip the tool through the ring loop at the end of the bracelet without the clasp. That will allow you to hold that end in place as you grasp the clasp with the other hand. Place the unhooked end of the paper clip in the palm of your hand that you wish to wear the bracelet on and grab a hold of it with your fingers.
INSIDE TIP: Take care when you’re hooking the paper clip through your bracelet so you don’t scratch the jewelry.
Close the clasp with your free hand. With the bracelet hooked, your reach is extended so it’s easier to wrap the jewelry around your wrist with your other hand and secure the clasp. Remember to unhook the paperclip from the bracelet’s ring loop before you head out to the door, though.
INSIDE TIP: Don’t toss out the tool when you’re done– keep it in your jewelry box for the next time you need to put on a bracelet without assistance.

]]>Throughout the existence of Brackish, our founders have traveled the world, hoping to discover something new: whether that’s design ideas, natural materials or new ways of thinking. Years ago, co-founder Jeff Pltoner was visiting Central America to see a mutual acquaintance, who later became a friend, when he was introduced to Creamos. Jeff visited their headquarters with a colleague and was immediately drawn to the daily situation and what this organization is doing to improve the lives of so many women.
The overall goal of Creamos is basic and powerful: looking to help those who are in need and provide resources to empower themselves to independence. Headquartered in Guatemala City, Creamos envisions a world in which no woman is required to work in a high-risk environment to support her family. With limited options, many of the local women live in the communities bordering the city’s garbage dump resulting in enormous economic, social and emotional challenges. While these women represent 51% of the local workforce, they are overrepresented in informal industries, are consistently faced with poor working conditions and face systemic barriers to health insurance, social security and other standard benefits. Creamos is challenging the narrative by offering these women dignified employment along with a variety of supportive programs to assist in achieving economic self-determination.
"I think that here (Creamos) we not only have an income, but we also are growing as people. And the truth I see is that there is a positive change for all the women here," said Odilia, Creamos employee.
Since Jeff’s initial visit to Creamos, Brackish has partnered on a variety of projects that have directly impacted this organization.
For Giving Tuesday on November 28th, Brackish is proud to give back to these incredible women. Every purchase made on this day will contribute to one full day of childcare for a woman working with Creamos. It's a tangible way to alleviate the stressors these women face daily. Beyond the transaction, each purchase becomes a catalyst for change, supporting Creamos in empowering the women of Guatemala City's communities.
We invite you to join this movement on Giving Tuesday, celebrating the power of community, kindness, and the profound impact of giving back to those who have supported us along the way. Shop for a cause: brackish.com
Celebrate the limitless potential found in the unexpected with our newest collection in collaboration with Mignonne Gavigan. This unique assortment of handcrafted men’s and women’s accessories is the embodiment of our shared passion in finding beauty in nature while redefining statement accessories.
The link between Brackish and Mignonne Gavigan originates from our founders’ remarkable and similar stories of accidental discovery, each sparking a visionary journey that would ultimately lead them to where they are today. Brackish began when co-founder Ben Ross was envisioning a unique gift for his groomsmen and noticed the silhouette of a turkey feather mimics that of a bow tie, while Mignonne Gavigan’s roots are equally as serendipitous. Founder Maggie harnessed her artistic intuition when, as a dress designer, she transformed a fallen piece of embellished fabric into a captivating neckpiece kindling the spark of the brand’s first design.
“The opportunity to partner with an innovative and like-minded company, one that shares a similarly unique approach to fashion, is exciting” says Brackish Co-Founder, Jeff Plotner. “Working together on these exclusive designs is a testament to the limitless potential that can be found in the unexpected. Our dedication to repurposing nature’s beauty aligns seamlessly with Mignonne Gavigan’s vision of reinventing accessories.”
Maggie, Founder of Mignonne Gavigan, adds a similar sentiment. “I’ve been drawn to the beautiful artistry of the Brackish bow ties for years now. I felt very aligned with them on two things; one, drawing on nature as their inspiration and two, the care with which they build each piece.”
The Brackish X Mignonne Gavigan collection unveils three striking accessory pairs, featuring coordinated handcrafted earrings and bow ties. Each set is crafted from collaborative color and style inspiration, combining the meticulous feather work of Brackish and exceptionally elegant hardware designs from Mignonne Gavigan.
Crafted with quail and goose feathers– this pink, white and taupe duo will make a light and refreshing addition to any look. The Westminster bow tie uses an asymmetrical technique to draw your eye from the soft outer edges to the center of natural, intricate patterns of quail feathers. The Kewanna double-sided earring features a halo of approximately 65 goose feathers to show off your feather flair from any angle.
The names are a nod to the recent 50th wedding anniversary of Jeff’s parents, honoring milestones in their relationship. Westminster is the church in which they were married while Kewanna is the street where they bought their first house together.
Showcasing a rich palette of emerald and brown pheasant feathers, offset by dotted guinea edges, this pair exudes seasonal sophistication. The Franklin draws inspiration from the distinct layered look of many classic, feather-favorite bow ties, like the Edisto and River Wind. The Charlotte is crafted with 60 wispy guinea feathers on the edges to give you a soft, yet statement-making look.
Maggie took this opportunity to honor her two homes - Franklin (Street) being her longtime address in New York City and Charlotte paying homage to her cherished hometown in North Carolina.
This show-stopping duo is crafted from iridescent, jewel-toned peacock feathers to boast a bold statement that is sure to turn heads. Artfully arranged green and blue peacock feathers come together in the Fielding to form a mirrored checkerboard pattern framed by iridescent plumes of gold. The Alice features meticulously hand-cut peacock feathers around the center ring surrounded by luminous golden peacock fans.
The names of this final pair, are a tribute to the love and appreciation Ben has for family. With this partnership, he brings Maggie into the Brackish family naming these pieces Fielding and Alice after her son and mother.
It was an honor to work alongside Maggie and the Mignonne Gavigan team to transcend the boundaries of conventional accessory design while remaining united under our shared commitment to transform the unexpected into something extraordinary. The full collection is now available to shop here.
INVERSA’s mission is to restore biodiversity and heal the planet through fashion. Their impact-driven approach is evident through the critical work they do in mitigating the invasion of non-native lionfish that are threatening ecosystems in the Caribbean basin. Their efforts help revive coral reefs by saving up to 70,000 native species for every lionfish removal.
Speaking about the partnership, Brackish co-founder Ben Ross shares, “This new relationship represents a significant step for Brackish as we continue to innovate our material assortment. Teaming up with INVERSA, a brand with values so naturally aligned with Brackish, allows us to add a new textural element with lionfish leather into our classic designs, embracing the beauty of nature in fresh, sustainable and unexpected ways.”
Kahan Chavda, INVERSA co-founder adds, “Brackish’s commitment to sustainability is what we see in the future of fashion, and it’s always a pleasure to work with first adopters to explore what regenerative products can be. Brackish and INVERSA both hold the core ethos of repurposing the beauty found only in nature, and this partnership is representative of those shared values.”
This partnership to redefine wearable art and forge innovative paths in sustainable fashion recently caught the attention of The Wall Street Journal.
A luxe statement piece, the Bristol Bay combines opulent sapphire goose feathers with a Lionfish leather bezel adorned with texture, creating a sophisticated and visually striking statement piece.
Classically monochromatic but with a textural twist, the Chandalar hoops feature bezeled designs made from luxuriously rich blue Lionfish leather inlays, highlighting the innate charm of this inventive material.
The Boswell earring incorporates a lavish blue Lionfish leather inlay, impeccably displaying its natural texture and offering a distinctive monochromatic style.
The collection is not only a testament to the aligned values of both our brands, but also a demonstration of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and embracing new opportunities to showcase our esteemed craftsmanship. Shop the full lionfish leather collection here.
Craig Melvin of The Today Show, took a moment on-air to surprise his long-time friend, and well known comedian, Mike Goodwin with the ultimate gift - a Mill Pond bow tie. In the stunning campaign photos for the launch of her new brand, Lively is seen wearing our very own Carew bow tie.
Meticulously handcrafted by our artisans, the Carew effortlessly combines crisp white goose feathers with a voluminous technique, resulting in an accessory that commands attention while exuding elegance. This, however, is not the first time Lively has confidently executed the male dominated fashion accessory of a Brackish bow tie. In 2018, she wore a now discontinued peacock feather tie during her A Simple Favor press tour.
Stepping into the world of television, the talented Don Cheadle recently sported our Guinea bow tie from his personal collection in a captivating episode of the hit show “Dave” where he amongst other guest stars attended the Met Gala. Though theatrical red carpet events are not the only place Cheadle has been seen wearing Brackish. He has been seen wearing some of his Brackish feather-favorites at the Oscars, Emmys, Venice International Film Festival, and more.
Cheadle’s refined sense of style perfectly complements the distinctive natural pattern of guinea feathers that are purposefully placed to create the complex yet symmetrical design of the Guinea bow tie. He has also been seen wearing our quail feather Grey Bobwhite and goose feather Carew, creating quite the collection.
Bill Murray, the iconic actor whose talent knows no bounds, chose to wear our Blue Chuka bow tie at the prestigious SAG Awards this year. The Blue Chuka captures the essence of classic elegance with a unique twist, featuring a captivating blend of blue, brown, taupe and cream hues from natural partridge feathers.
Murray is no stranger to Brackish– he has been spotted many times flaunting his feathers as early as 2014, when he presented an award at the Oscars for Best Cinematography with Amy Adams.
In the latest season of the hit television series “Yellowstone”, Gil Birmingham’s character Thomas Rainwater can be seen wearing our Twilight Plum Thicket Pin upon his lapel. The dramatic nature of the series matches that of this small, but statement-making accessory crafted with vibrant blue peacock feathers and contrasting guinea dots.
NASCAR Driver and 2023 Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. recently wore our best-selling Rice bow tie on his special day to marry his now wife Madyson at a charming Charleston, SC wedding. His choice reflected classic southern charm and sophistication with jet black, voluminous goose feathers that add a timeless twist to the traditional black bow tie.
TODAY show host Craig Melvin recently wore our River Wind bow tie during Al Roker’s Induction to the Broadcasting + Cable Hall of Fame. The River Wind’s striking combination of pheasant and guinea feathers exude a look of class and distinction– two qualities that both Melvin and Roker embody themselves.
Melvin is a long-time fan of Brackish himself, supporting his fellow Wofford College alumni, our co-founders Ben and Jeff. Melvin has worn various feather accessories throughout the years and even welcomed us on the TODAY show in 2021 for a holiday gifting segment.
Avid adventurer and Discovery Channel host, Forrest Galante embraced the allure of guinea feathers and opted for a full ensemble at the Annual Explorers Club Event. Galante donned the Gatsby bow tie, Bear Cufflink & Stud Set, and Guinea 2.0 Pocket Square. This carefully curated collection of all natural guinea feathers captures Galante’s love and appreciation for nature.
We are incredibly grateful for the exposure that each and every one of these wonderful people have given Brackish. Their support is a testament to our unwavering commitment to repurpose the beauty of mother nature into unique, handcrafted pieces of wearable art that embody sophistication and individuality.

Each and every Brackish piece arrives in a carefully curated packaging ensemble that mirrors our values and celebrates our story. The journey begins with a pine box, adorned with our iconic B. The brand, which is hand-burned onto each box, is a nod to our co-founder Ben’s grandfather. Growing up, Ben watched him brand all of his most cherished personal belongings - from his wallet to his tackle box.
The evolution of our branded B started with the use of the stove in Jeff’s apartment on Rutledge Ave. and soon transitioned to an open fire outside after one too many smoke alarms were set off. Following suit with our continuous push to innovate, we traded in the stove and fire pit, but kept the tradition alive by still hand branding each and every box using updated technology at our design studio.
Inside each pine box, you’ll find a burlap insert, elegantly embracing your handcrafted accessory. The burlap is representative of oyster bags– symbolic of our home base in the Lowcountry as well as a familiar pastime for Jeff, being that his first job was shucking oysters at The Crab Trap while he was in high school.
While each packaging material holds a deeper meaning to our brand’s journey, they also serve a dual purpose and act as a safeguard to protect the delicate details of your Brackish accessories.
To ensure the longevity of your Brackish piece, we recommend following these simple care instructions:
After each wear, return your piece back to its original pine box to protect it from dust, harsh sunlight and other potentially damaging elements.
While our quality and craftsmanship have greatly improved over the last decade through the use of innovative techniques for long-lasting wear, feathers are delicate by nature and should be gently handled to preserve the intricacy of each design.
To preserve the beauty of your Brackish piece, avoid exposing it to water, creams or sprays. Be mindful to remove your accessories before swimming, showering, or engaging in activities that may cause excessive perspiration.
We stand behind the durability and craftsmanship of our designs. However, if your feathers start to ruffle or your accessory requires repair, take advantage of our Brackish Guarantee. Register your piece on our website here to receive access to our complimentary repair service– allowing your piece to be rejuvenated and enjoyed for generations to come.
Every element of a Brackish accessory, from the meticulously handcrafted design to the thoughtfully curated packaging, has purpose and meaning that encapsulates our brand's very first core value: to respectfully repurpose the beauty of nature. As you unbox your next Brackish piece, we encourage you to take a closer look at the details. To you, it may just be a wooden box, but to us, it’s the story of who we are.

]]>In this Q&A, we sat down with our co-founders Ben and Jeff to learn more about the qualities they admire most in their mothers and wives, the biggest lessons they've learned, and how these important women inspired the inception of the very first Brackish Women's Collection.
Ben: Devotion to family and friends, kind heartedness and an absolute sense of self.
Jeff: Hard work and unconditional love.
Young Ben and his mom, Julie.
Ben: Put your heart and soul in all your endeavors.
Jeff: Always being there for your family, be present, be the best at what you do, and once you commit, go all in.
Ben: She has been instrumental since the beginning and is the reason Brackish exists today. Her encouragement for me to listen to and follow my heart; incorporating a gift inspired by nature led me to create and give the first feather bow ties to my groomsmen. She, nor I had any idea 15 years ago it would turn into what it is today.
Jeff: Supportive but apprehensive - wasn’t sure it was the best idea to drop everything and start this business from scratch!! Can’t blame her - she’s one of the biggest Brackish cheerleaders now. The lessons I learned from her growing up went into all the work required to start and maintain a business every day.
Young Jeff and his mom, Becky.
Ben: Well, it’s far from figured out but I do appreciate you saying it appears that way. Everyday we strive to be the best team for our boys that we can be; always trying to enrich their lives, provide learning opportunities and life lessons. Mary Ann is my rock, my sounding board and my best friend. With her in my life I feel like I can do anything. Through her encouragement and devotion; I am able to push boundaries of form, fashion and feathers I never thought possible. She is everything to me and there would be no Brackish had she said no to my crazy idea for a groomsmen’s gift 15 years ago….kind of surreal to think about it like that; that one decision has had such a profound impact on our lives and so many others.
Jeff: We definitely don’t have raising 3 boys ages 2, 5 and 7 all figured out - far from it! The only person who was 100% behind me dropping it all and starting Brackish with Ben was my wife Courtney. She actually made hundreds of bow ties with us in the very beginning and trained an early employee on our Pheasant tie. Not sure I would have gotten through some of the tough times without her. The entire Plotner and Ross families have an outsize impact on the daily drive we have to innovate and evolve as a brand.
Ben's wife Mary Ann, and two sons Benson and Laken. Mary Ann is wearing her namesake cuffs, the Mary Ann Thin and Mary Ann Wide.
Ben: The mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, sisters, ect all had an enormous impact on the inspiration for the Women’s Collection. From the obvious regarding their namesakes to the attention to the most miniscule details, their tutelage is the reason the collection has been such an enormous hit. It took us three years from my initial prototypes to roll out our finished product and this was due to a desire to ensure the collection reflected our love for them and a desire to honor them.
Jeff: All the women in our lives inspired the collection through high quality and attention to detail. In order to put our name behind a brand new category, we had to make sure that our finished product was something the women in our lives would enthusiastically approve and wear - no small task! What we started with compared to what we released 3 years later were quite different - we were pushed to innovate in order to create pieces such as the Courtney, the Mary Ann, the Cissy and much more.
Jeff with his wife Courtney, and their three sons, Tucker, Barnes, and Judson.
To all the moms, wives, grandmothers, stepmoms, aunts, and mother figures who fill our lives with comfort and joy – thank you and Happy Mother’s Day.
With spring in full bloom, there is not a more suitable time to highlight our exquisite collection featuring this new head-turning hue. Each piece of Viva Magenta jewelry or accessory is handcrafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, making them true works of wearable art.
Styling bold, colorful, and vibrant accessories with monochromatic outfits is a great way to introduce some fun and playfulness into your wardrobe. Monochromatic outfits, consisting of pieces in a single color or varying shades of the same color, provide the perfect backdrop for these Viva Magenta jewelry pieces to shine.
Below you can see the Tolumnia Circle Earring and the Mokara Wide Cuff are styled with a pale blue blouse and matching trouser, creating a solid backdrop and allowing your eye to naturally find a focus on the contrasting colors of the accessories.
One of the best ways to style these bright and bold Viva Magenta accessories is to pair them with simple, neutral outfits. This allows the piece to be the focal point of the outfit and prevents it from clashing with other elements. Opt for neutral hues like whites, tans and greys, allowing the vibrant hues to speak for themselves.
The Wayfarer bow tie and Key West cufflink and stud set stand out against this elegant cream colored suit for a striking and eye-catching look.
If you're looking to make a bold statement with your fashion choices, this maximalist style may be the way to go. This style incorporates vibrant colors, eclectic patterns, and an overall "more is more" mentality when it comes to fashion. A great way to take maximalist style to the next level is by pairing colorful accessories with equally colorful clothing.
The key to pulling off this look is to welcome creative chaos. Instead of trying to match your accessories to your outfit, choose pieces that contrast in color and style. For example, in the image below, you notice the teal dress paired with the magenta Venus statement earrings. The idea is to create a dynamic and eye-catching look that embraces the unexpected.
Ultimately, fashion is all about self-expression and having fun. Whether you’re a maximalist at heart or prefer a more understated look, the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel confident– and that is exactly what this color of the year promotes.

If you're not sure how to style accessories for a spring wardrobe, start by choosing one bold statement piece to use as inspiration. Our Spring Collection includes eye-catching designs from hand-selected feathers in vibrant hues like the Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, along with pops of seafoam, lavender, and poppy red.
Try pairing the pieces below with a simple white shirt and jeans or dress it up with a fun dress or slacks to create a fresh, modern look that's perfect for sunny days and warm spring nights.
One thing we love about this season is the combination of different patterns and textures. The Spring Collection includes a range of pieces that incorporate unique textures from a variety of different featherways.
The Nomad is the perfect example– this design features upturned pheasant feathers atop a flat base of iridescent peacock feathers to create a completely unique look and feel. Pair it with the Pioneer lapel pin, Rambler pocket square, or Biscayne cufflinks for an overall textured and timeless look. From casual to formal, these are perfectly versatile pieces.
Nomad Bow Tie / Rambler Pocket Square
As seen on the Spring 2023 runways, brands ranging from Givenchy to Tory Burch heavily featured bold cuffs worn at the wrist or higher up on the arm. This trend of big and bold statements for the wrist continues from what we saw in Fall 2022.
Our newest collection is equipped with a variety of different cuffs to help you take on this trend for the season ahead. The Mokara cuff, available in a wide or thin silhouette, features vibrant hues of seafoam, poppy and magenta making it a showstopper on your wrist. Each cuff is crafted with goose, pheasant and turkey feathers to create a structured and angular repeating pattern for a geometric and eye-catching look.
For a more subtle color palette, the Ludisia wide and thin cuffs create an eye-catching fashion statement with perfectly placed, delicate goose feather petals in muted tones of pink and purple atop a dusty lavender backdrop.
One of the greatest things about stud earrings is that they can be worn with almost everything. Whether you're wearing a casual t-shirt and jeans or a formal cocktail dress, stud earrings can add a touch of sophistication without being overbearing.
Our spring studs are available in a wide range of natural and dyed feathers, making them a fun way to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. If you're wearing a neutral outfit, the geometric pattern of the Miltonia or the natural peacock eye on the Yuka 2.0 are perfect pieces to add a playful touch. Conversely, the Ke’oke’o 2.0, Snowflake 2.0, or Tara 2.0 are the perfect neutral studs to offset a bold pattern or bright colored garment.
Cascade 2.0 / Yuka 2.0 / Tara 2.0 / Ke'oke'o 2.0 / Snowflake 2.0
With the arrival of Spring, warmer temperatures are right around the corner and the need for a full formal suit becomes limited. When the attire gets taken down a notch, opt for one of our feather-adorned lapel pins for a simplistic yet elevated look.
The Rover pin offers a stunning contrast between the rich base of jade goose feathers and the hand curved, stark white rooster feathers. For a more natural look, layers of peacock and pheasant are combined for a sophisticated color palette that showcases the soft iridescence of each feather in the Pioneer lapel pin.
From bold colors and patterns to classic neutrals and sophisticated textures, our Spring Collection offers endless possibilities for creating elevated outfits that are perfect for the season ahead. We hope you embrace the vibrancy and playfulness of the season with our tips for how to style accessories that express your unique personality.

Matt and Paul, or the “Go-To Guys”, play an integral role in the organization and execution of our process. When they aren’t hard at work in the warehouse tracking inventory, working with suppliers, sorting hardware, or engraving boxes, you can find them always willing to help the team with whatever needs to be done.
Matt: I started in October 2022 and I was brought on as the Purchasing and Sourcing Specialist.
Paul: I started at Brackish in October 2021, a little over 15 months now. Initially, I was hired on as a production assistant, but recently I was promoted to Inventory Assistant.
M: I like to get in early, check any emails from the previous afternoon and evening. I’ll look to see what orders I can expect to be delivered for that day and update the team with any urgent information. I spend a lot of the day working with Paul in the warehouse to identify items we are getting low on and will react accordingly.
P: My day starts with checking and updating any of the spreadsheets I manage. I then start resupplying artisans with any items they might need, select hardware for any upcoming orders, brand & engrave boxes, as well as help out wherever needed.
M: Along with ensuring that we have plenty of raw material in our warehouse and keeping up with active purchase orders, I’ll be taking on some other responsibilities as well. One of the major changes at Brackish this year will be the implementation of new backend systems. With my experience and knowledge, I’ll be part of the implementation team to ensure we have a smooth transition.
P: Most of my role is keeping track of inventory so there’s no chance that our artistic process is brought to a halt by an absence of anything. The other portion is preparing the box that houses the jewelry by branding the box with our signature B and engraving them with a custom message if desired.
M: I really enjoy working with our suppliers and constantly looking for new ways to improve our Supply Chain. I take great satisfaction in providing the material, tools, and all production needs to our team members in a timely and efficient manner so they can perform their tasks in the best possible process.
P: The environment. It is great being around people that are friendly, caring, and contribute to making a workspace that is enjoyable to come to each day. The dog friendly environment is great as well. I love each and every dog that frequents here!
M: I think I had worn one bow tie in my life before working here. I have a couple now and even got my 10 year old son to wear one! I would say my favorites so far are the Fripp cufflinks and Black Jack belt. I’m just learning about women’s jewelry, but so far, my wife has loved every piece I’ve brought home to her! She loves the Lavin drop earrings and I got my mother in law the Courtney thin cuff that she wears all the time!
P: That’s a hard question. For mens I would have to say my favorites are the Blue Chuka, Turner, and the Royal bow ties. For women’s I would say the Quicksand, Asharah wide cuff, and the Aly stud earrings.
M: Having a 10 year old boy that is into many different sports keeps us pretty busy. Whenever I get the chance, I like to sneak in a round of golf or spend the day cooking.
P: I typically spend time with friends and family. Recently, they have gotten me hooked on rock climbing, but we all compete in fighting game tournaments which I regularly organize locally. These tournaments are my biggest creative outlet as I’m having to always look for new ways to craft a better experience for all the players.

For over 3 years, Courtney has brought the Brackish story to life through her creativity and multifaceted storytelling. Her attention to detail and eye for design play an integral role in where we are as a brand today. When she's not cracking an unexpected joke and filling the office with laughter, she's hard at work capturing the essence of Brackish through a variety of mediums.
I have been working at Brackish for a little over 3 years, and I’m the Design & Creative Lead on our Marketing Team.
In short, my role is to ensure that our communication and creative efforts are aligned with the Brackish brand standards. My day to day primarily consists of design work on our marketing materials and campaigns, in conjunction with the rest of the Marketing & Social Team. I also work closely with our Development Team to generate seasonal catalogs and supplementary collateral, and I often collaborate with our Wholesale Team to coordinate branded communication to our retail partners.
In preparation for our major collection releases, we have seasonal Brackish photoshoots that involve an assortment of moving parts. In an effort to maintain brand consistency, my role in these shoots begins long before we make our way on-set. I assist my team in model selection, location scouting and, of course, creative planning once the new designs have been perfected by our incredibly talented team of Designers and Artisans. As we head into shoot-day, my role shifts behind the screen. Here, I lay eyes on every image to make sure our pieces are shown in their best light and that every intricate detail is captured to its full potential. These photoshoots are an exciting change of pace that have allowed me to explore areas of not only our craft but also our beautiful city of Charleston– that I otherwise would have missed.
Our rebranding to Brackish was a milestone in which I’m incredibly proud to have played even a small part. I joined the team in the summer of 2019, right before we launched our very first women’s collection. Needless to say, that was a pivotal moment in our brand’s history– and I feel that the rebrand is reflective of that transition while remaining true to our storied roots. Throughout the rebranding journey, I assisted primarily in the website update that was launched in tandem with the transition from Brackish Bow Ties to Brackish. This site update not only featured a fresh look, but also optimized the shopping experience for our customers. We received a great response, and we’re always seeking new opportunities to improve the brand experience from start to finish.
My inspiration for our creative assets and imagery is truly generated by our story. Our brand has blossomed from one, meaningful feather bow tie between friends into a complete accessory spread for both men and women, and that process colors every piece of creative that crosses my desk. It’s my intent that our communication efforts speak to the heart of our beginnings and our commitment to respectfully repurpose the beauty found in nature, while also reflecting our artisan craftsmanship and the elevated sensibilities of our work. Brackish represents approachable luxury, with a soul – and that’s what I strive to convey in my work here.
The element I appreciate most here at Brackish is creative freedom. There’s an underlying openness to new ideas and creativity that I find allows all of our team to continue innovating and moving forward.
My style trends toward classic, neutral hues and understated silhouettes. With that said, my top 3 favorite men’s pieces would be the Grey Bobwhite bow tie, the Papadopoulos bow tie and the Carew Pocket Square. Meanwhile, my top 3 women’s pieces are currently the Lavin drop earrings, the Ocean Song multi-bezel cuff and the Rio stud earrings (for a dainty pop of color).
When my mind strays from all things feather-related, I can usually be found spending time with my family over classic southern foods (give me all the mac & cheese, please) with my favorite go-to show, Smallville, on in the background. I also enjoy playing in local pick-up sports leagues, and when I’m feeling a little extra creative– you can find me behind the easel (painting all the florals my heart desires).
]]>When it comes to the use of feathers as a fashion statement, we didn’t invent the wheel– we reimagined it. At Brackish, our very first core value is to respectfully repurpose the beauty of nature, and we continue to uphold that tradition by handcrafting wearable art from sustainably sourced feathers. As our innovation continues and we strive to create new and unique pieces, we are taking a look back at the history of feathers in fashion.
The first known instance of feathers being incorporated into apparel dates back centuries, when they were often used as sartorial decoration. It was commonly thought that the act of adorning the body with elements of nature, like feathers, was a way of honoring the land in which the people lived.
Feathers continued to be worn in admiration for centuries, and they became a symbol of pristine elegance among early fashion trends. Over time, feather-adorned garments infiltrated a variety of styles including hats, jackets, dresses, headpieces and of course, the iconic feather boa. The mesmerizing movement of the feathers continued to reign supreme in the fashion world for decades to come.
As the landscape of the fashion industry has evolved, an emphasis on sustainability has moved to the forefront. This has created opportunities for more intentional and approachable uses of feathers in fashion, which ultimately led to the feather trend regaining momentum in the 20th century.
Bold styles of the ’70s and ’80s included an influx of flouncy, feathery looks from notable celebrities like Elton John and Cher. Elton John was notorious for wearing flamboyant outfits involving feather decorated costumes while Cher was seen flaunting feather headpieces or dresses as she took center stage. Feathers continued to add a sense of magnitude to fashion looks continuing into the subsequent decades. On the ’80s and ’90s runways, we saw a bigger-is-better mentality in retrospect to earlier ages.
The new millennium brought even more ways to incorporate this element of mother nature into fashion. We began to see an expansion of feather-adorned accessories such as feather hair extensions and earrings. The trend then exploded making feathers the quintessential 2010s accessory. More recently, modern iterations of feathers have returned to the runways, appearing in collections of luxury designers such as Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, and more.
From statement-making feather hair extensions and distinguished jewelry, to feather-centric prints and textiles– ceremonial costumes and haute couture are no longer the sole domain of feathers in fashion.
Up until this point, the history of feathers in fashion was geared toward women's styles. That was until our co-founder, Ben Ross, found a way to bring his love and admiration for the outdoors to the luxury fashion statement of the classic bow tie.
One night, Ben had a lightbulb moment as he was admiring turkey feathers in one hand and held a bow tie in the other. He noticed that night that the natural shape and tapering of the turkey feather fits the silhouette of a bow tie perfectly. This groundbreaking idea then turned into a full-blown fashion movement, fueled by respectfully repurposing the beauty of nature.
It was not long before Brackish garnered the attention of top celebrities. Bill Murray took the red carpet at the Oscars in 2014 sporting the Original bow tie. From there, celebrities such as Andy Samberg at the 2015 Emmys, Thomas Rhett at the 2017 Country Music Awards, and many more.
This year at Brackish we celebrated our 10-year anniversary and the immense growth that our brand has seen since the first year. What started with bow ties, has now blossomed into a full men’s and women’s accessory line that honors the beauty found in nature.
How will we continue to utilize feathers in fashion for years to come? Well, as Ben has always said “We deal in feathers, the sky isn’t the limit, it’s where we soar.”

There’s no better excuse to do some shopping than a change of season. We created the ultimate accessory guide for the season ahead embracing all of the top trends seen on the runway.
Did someone say cuffing season? As seen on the runways of Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen– cuffs are coming back this season in a major way. When it comes to cuffs, more is more and bigger is better for Fall 2022.
Our newest collection is equipped with a variety of different cuffs to help you take on this trend for the season ahead. The Knock Out is adorned with burgundy peacock eyes that are deliberately placed at alternating angles to highlight the natural gold iridescence of the feathers, creating an intricate and eye-catching pattern. Available in a wide or thin silhouette, this fall favorite can be worn alone or together to make the ultimate statement.
For a different, yet coordinating design, the New Dawn thin cuff plays into the golden hues of the burgundy peacock. Add to your stack the dainty additions of Voodoo or Apricot for a wrist full of seasonal shades to elevate your autumnal ensembles.
Get into the swing of the season with pieces that move along with you. As seen donned on models walking the runways, swinging accessories are reigning supreme this fall. For a day (or night) out on the town, opt for some fringy fun to level up a simple look.
The made-to-move, voluminous layering technique used for our Statement Earrings fits the bill for this playful trend. A pop of color perfect for fall, the Breezer earrings are crafted in rich marine blue goose feathers to add statement-making style to any look. For a more playful look, choose the Breezer Petite design.
If head-turning hues are not your typical go-to, the Queen Mary flaunts icy silver goose feathers for a design that is flirty with a touch of fluff. Not sold on the statement? The Queen Mary Petites pack the same playful punch in a shorter silhouette.
So far we have talked about new trends and old trends that have resurfaced, but perhaps the most dependable trend for fall 2022 is the hoop earring. While traditional hoops are still being worn more than ever, this season is all about a unique take on this classic style.
Our channel hoops add some flair to the standard silhouette with an inlay of meticulously placed feathers. This season’s feather favorite hoops include the Star Dust and Drift. The Star Dust is crafted with an all new Brackish featherway that highlights the natural speckling of golden pheasant feathers – a warm toned hue that is perfect for the cooler days ahead. The Drift design gives a bold update to quintessential style with slate black turkey feathers that glisten with the touch of daylight.
For a more unique take on this accessory staple, look no further than our Double-Sided hoops. More is more with these handcrafted designs featuring double the feathers so you are serving looks from any angle. Get two pairs of hoops in one with the Silver Dollar that features our best-selling guinea feathers in two different, yet coordinating designs. Or, opt for a naturally neutral look with the Taylor, designed with cream, tan and brown quail feathers that scream fall.
Let’s talk formal flair for the gents. The Holiday season is right around the corner so it’s time to dust off the formal wear in preparation for luxurious events and galas. Our Fall Collection features a mix of bow ties with contrasting designs fit for every type of gentleman.
For the bold, the DuPre is colorfully crafted in peacock and pheasant feathers and perfectly captures the transitional colors of the fall season.
Turn up the volume with the Shipp. Crafted with a mix of marine goose and natural almond pheasant feathers, the textured tie can be dressed up or down for the ultimate cross-over style.
For the classic gentleman, the Papadopulos showcases the natural shape of the black and white guinea feathers, offset with black goose and green rooster feathers. This asymmetrical design provides just the right amount of unique, head-turning style to revamp the modern bow tie.
Perfect for black tie affairs, the Marsh dons rich shades of burgundy with peeks of golden iridescence that is sure to set you apart from the crowd.
For a more subtle color palette, the Wightman displays silver goose as a beautiful base to highlight the statement making center stripe crafted in deep marine blue goose, cream turkey and tan and brown pheasant feathers.
In this season marked by change, we’ve got the accessories to give your wardrobe a fresh new look. Featuring rich hues, all-new feather patterns and a fresh take on your favorite Brackish silhouettes, this collection embodies distinct autumnal style. Crafting just one piece can take hours of meticulous preparation. Being able to craft every single Brackish piece seems like an impossible task, but for the first time in Brackish history, one incredibly talented artisan has accomplished this (among many other things) and achieved the title of Master Artisan.
We sat down with Lindsay to get a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day of a Master Artisan at Brackish.
This month is my 4-year anniversary at Brackish and I am an artisan.
I like to start off each morning by coming in to work and giving my doggy coworkers a little belly rub before I start gathering up my supplies for the day and getting everything organized. I have made all the different types of products that Brackish sells, but I mostly make bow ties; which I don’t mind at all because they are my favorite. I select a kit of feathers for a specific bow tie design and I get lost in my craft. Each tie gets my full attention - from every feather individually selected to the way they are applied, I take great joy in making each product that leaves my desk the best it can be.
I have worked for Brackish for 4 years but it wasn’t until 2 years ago that Brackish developed a classification system that encourages Artisans to work hard and accomplish a variety of goals. The classification system starts at trainee and eventually reaches the highest level, master, which is measured by a combination of production and quality successes and the exemplification of Brackish core values. In order to achieve this milestone, you have to meet certain qualifications. While there are a variety of qualifications that must be met, I will mention one in particular that took me the longest to complete and the one I am most proud of. To be a Master Artisan you have to be able to make every product type that Brackish offers - over 20 different categories! This final objective allowed me to push myself to make new things all while learning a lot in the process.
Besides hard work and dedication, the reason I was able to accomplish this title is because I truly love this job and I want to promote a company that has been so good to me. I’ve been lucky to have amazing managers and coworkers on this journey with me to teach me and build me up along the way.
Every time I am asked this question I have to pick 2 because I use them every day. The first is “What Box?” and the second is “Better, Better, Better”. "What box?" is important to me and I use it daily because I get to work in a job that not only lets me work outside of the box but encourages it. I get to come up with new, better, and innovative ways to do my job easier and faster. Because of the collaborative spirit of Brackish, I can share those ideas with my coworkers.
"Better, better, better" is probably my favorite because you can always find ways to be better at what you do. I try really hard to make every product as if I was making it for a friend or family member because I want whoever opens their Brackish box to be blown away and have the best experience possible.
My favorite men’s pieces are the Hammock, the Turner, and the Mill Pond bow ties. My favorite women’s pieces are the Mary Ann Wide Cuff, the Dez Drop Earring, and the new Liberty Drop Earrings.
Other than just the actual job, I really enjoy the people I work with, human and dog alike. Being able to do what I love with dogs running around and making everyone smile is awesome!
I enjoy doing any kind of craft like crocheting, coloring, digital art, and designing shirts and stickers. However, aside from crafty things I love spending time with friends and family and my two great dogs, Penny and Nash. I like to go camping, swimming, and I love watching movies.
The inception of Brackish began 15 years ago as a groomsmen gift, so we know a thing or two about weddings. We’ve created the ultimate guide to weddings in the lowcountry. From modern and sleek to boho and beach, we’ve got the recommendations to help you get your big day details squared away.
A black tie wedding is a classic yet refined event deep-rooted in traditions– and nobody does traditions quite like the south.
When planning this wedding theme, there are many factors to take into consideration to execute a night that will make you and your guests feel like royalty - starting with the dress code. Black tie style abounds with tuxedos and floor length gowns. While the classic black or white bow tie is a dependable option, opt for our Rice or Carew for timeless texture and rich, solid color. Complete your wedding party with other black and white styles for an overall cohesive, yet intricately detailed appearance. For the groomsmen, the River Wind, St. Pierre, or Guinea. For bridesmaids, the Jane, Parades, or Gault statement earrings are the perfect complement to the men’s bow ties in a striking and memorable silhouette.
Now that you are all dressed the part, let’s talk venues. A Black Tie wedding venue should be nothing short of grand. It should encompass high ceilings, natural lighting , and ample space for formal seating arrangements. Some of the best black tie wedding venues include art centers, ballrooms, halls, libraries, and banqueting houses.
We listed a few of our favorite Charleston venues that exude opulence, glamor, charm, and elegance– all of which come together to create the perfect Black Tie wedding.
Located in the heart of the Historic District, Charleston’s premier art museum offers a setting rich with history and charm for unforgettable events. The Gibbes’ Beaux Arts building boasts impressive architectural details and unique spaces with soaring ceilings.
Fans of The Notebook will recognize the circa-1942 Art Deco movie house from Allie and Noah's first date. Celebrate in Hollywood style with cocktail hour in the lobby and a reception in the venue's glamorous ballroom. And best of all? You and your groom can put your name in lights on the theater's old-school marquee out front.
The recently renovated performing arts center in the middle of downtown Charleston is ideal for brides who have long dreamed of an elegant and traditional wedding reception. A formal lobby with a grand staircase makes for picture-perfect photo opportunities, and the various ballrooms provide couples with plenty of venue options.
If you embrace minimalistic designs and would rather your big day feel bright, beautiful, and chic, then a modern wedding in Charleston is perfect for you.
Modern weddings embrace current trends while simultaneously creating their own. It is your chance to break past boundaries that are tied to the traditional ideals of a wedding. One way to do this is through the details and accessories. For the groom, opt for the Jared, the traditional black and white hues with a modern and geometrical twist - or go bold with the Hammock or Flintlock. For the groomsmen, keep it simple with matching feather pocket squares.
As you’re considering your modern wedding venue, try to avoid spaces with a tight and cluttered feel. This type of wedding theme is all about open spaces and minimalism. You’ll want a venue that feels contemporary and spacious, inclusive with high ceilings and bright lighting. Some of the best modern venues may include an elegant rooftop, a spacious brewery, a magical garden, or a large, industrial location. Here are some of our lowcountry favorites with a modern feel:
One of Charleston's newest—and most celebrated—hotels, The Dewberry is a modern setting of remarkable warmth and elegance that evokes old Charleston in attitude and aesthetic. A Viennese cast brass palmetto chandelier and oversized gilded antique mirrors set the mood in this stylish space. White Oak parquet floors reminiscent of Versailles, as well as works by Charleston artist Douglas Balentine commissioned for the hotel, add to the room’s opulent atmosphere.
Hotel Bennett offers the ultimate setting for spectacular, unforgettable wedding celebrations. Featuring over 12,000 square feet of the most luxurious and flexible event space in Charleston, this one-of- a-kind destination provides an exceptional backdrop for your upcoming nuptials. High above the city, the Observatory and the Piazza offer expansive skyline views of downtown Charleston – serving as a stunning wedding location.
Outdoor weddings are rapidly growing in popularity and for good reason. There is something magical and romantic about being married surrounded by nature and all your closest loved ones. It allows the opportunity for adventurous planning and a personal touch that otherwise may be limited by the 4 walls of an indoor venue.
Outdoor weddings evoke feelings of lightness, airiness, and all that Mother Nature has to offer. Bring Mother Nature's paintbrush into all aspects of your wedding from the built-in decor of spanish moss to the accessories worn by your wedding party. Our feather designs are made to honor the beauty found in nature. For the groom, the Royal bow tie paired with the matching Sonada lapel pin for all the groomsmen is the optimal combination for a light and whimsical outdoor wedding. Gift the bridesmaids matching earrings of the Blushing Bride or Snow Queen for your wedding party to have a unified look.
When choosing an outdoor wedding venue, there are many things to consider but perhaps the most important part is the scenery which becomes your decor. Lucky for you, our city has picture-perfect places around every corner. Here are some of our top favorite venues for outdoor weddings in Charleston:
There are a variety of venues located within Boone Hall that are nothing short of breathtaking. The memorable Avenue of Oaks, a line of 270-year-old live oak trees stretching for almost a mile, provides a one-of-a-kind lowcountry scene. Spanish moss cascades from the arching branches to create a breathtaking natural canopy. Move further in and you’ll find the impressive Cotton Dock House along the marsh which offers plenty of space for dinner and dancing. Its gorgeous brick fireplace creates a focal point at one end, while the all-wood interior with its open-beam construction lends the space a rustic ambiance.
Lowndes Grove stands proudly along the oak-lined banks of the Ashley River. This beautifully restored estate offers an unparalleled backdrop for one-of-a-kind weddings and celebrations. Within this relaxed and refined setting, the scenic beauty of the Lowcountry unfolds with panoramic sunset views along the waterfront.
Whatever your vision—an intimate gathering under ancient live oaks, an indoor-outdoor celebration on the banks of the Ashley River, or an elegant reception on the porch of Magnolia’s nineteenth-century house, overlooking our magnificent Romantic-style gardens— Magnolia Plantation and Gardens can make it come true.
Located on Johns Island, this Charleston wedding venue features a quaint, old farmhouse nestled among centuries old, majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss. The site has an elegant wedding tent situated on the banks of a placid, saltwater pond that’s sure to wow you and your guests.
Bohemian style evokes the feeling of freedom, effortlessness, and laid-back vibes. Think of ethereal accents of natural materials (like feathers, wink wink), flowy dresses, fairy lights, plenty of green leaves, ferns, and dried flowers.
For the groom, we recommend sticking with our naturally neutral options such as the Amur, Wallace or Grey Bobwhite. For the bride, the Bergan or Anna earrings would adequately tie in for a beautiful match made in feathers.
When thinking of a venue for a Boho themed wedding, the key is to find a place that brings in natural elements such as exposed wooden beams, large windows for natural lighting and warm, earthy tones throughout. Here are a few of our top recommendations in Charleston:
Whether you want to host the ceremony in the greenery-filled courtyard or boogie down with the band in the Trolley Room, where original exposed beams play up the building's history, the unique venue has a little something for everybody.
Imagine a bright, airy event space that can hold up to 550 of your closest family and friends. The exposed brick, wood columns, and hardwood floors show off the space's age and character, while enormous windows give guests views of the water and the city's iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge (which also serves as the inspiration for one of our favorite ties - the Chuck-Town).
Located at one of Charleston’s most historic addresses, Camden Room makes its home in the circa 1856 Deans Warehouse. Featuring exposed brick, hardwood floors and original beams that accent 30’ ceilings, the copper roof and natural light from clerestory windows in the space epitomizes Southern Hospitality.
Close your eyes for a second and imagine hearing the sound of gently crashing waves as you say “I do” surrounded by friends and family who love and adore you. Sounds pretty nice right?
There's nothing quite like getting married at the beach. A beach themed wedding should embrace bright and light colors such as blues and whites tying in the sand and the sea. Our Summerall bow tie is just that. It incorporates hues of blue and white with an airy texture that is perfect for a beachy wedding. Match the groomsmen with the Deas Hall pocket square or Hagood lapel pins for dapper gentlemen down the line. For the Bride and her bridesmaids, choose pieces from our White and Gold Jewelry Collection to complete the bridal party look.
The Charleston beaches are home to many stunning beach wedding venues to soak up the sun and welcome the warm ocean breeze. Here are some of our favorites:
For a destination-within-a-destination wedding, The Sanctuary is hard to beat. The five-star beachfront resort offers a quiet seaside escape for the wedding party and guests. Have your ceremony on the private beach in front of the hotel, or skip the sand (and keep the Atlantic Ocean views!) and opt for a ceremony on the hotel's lawn. Ballrooms inside open up to ocean views or gardens, depending on which one you book, so you can continue the indoor/outdoor feel through your reception.
Wild Dunes combines the charm of Charleston with the beauty of the beach. You can choose from an array of charming and picturesque ceremony and reception venues – including those with views of the pristine Isle of Palms shores. From the sandy beach to croquet lawns, to the Sweetgrass Pavilion and the Palmetto Hall, they have a special space to fit every bride's desires.
Whatever your wedding style may be, it’s always the perfect time to say, “I do” in Charleston.

For over 5 years, Kenzie has been the final stop as each handcrafted piece makes its way from our studio to your doorstep. Her go-getter energy, attention to detail and ability to move at hyper-speed combine to make her a Fulfillment Force to be reckoned with.
We sat down with Kenzie to get a behind-the-scenes look at the final moments before our products are loaded onto the truck and sent off on their way to patiently waiting customers.
My role at Brackish is to run our fulfillment for both wholesale and direct customers, so my main focus is to ensure that all orders get to their final destinations all over the world in a timely and efficient manner.
I'm the last piece of the puzzle. Each Brackish product takes hours to craft and passes through 15 sets of hands before it gets to me and out the door. Before packing anything, I make sure to take a last look at each piece to ensure it’s perfect for our customers.
The thing I enjoy most about working at Brackish is the fabulous and talented people I interact with every day. The dog-friendly environment is a pretty great perk too!
It’s such a variety depending on if I’m focused on wholesale partner orders or direct orders. The wholesale orders can be hundreds of units at a time whereas our online orders are one to two units but lots of boxes. Every day it can be anywhere between 35-75. The most... that's a tough one. I'd say close to 350 followed by a few margaritas after work ;)
That's a hard question, but I would have to say the Jared bow tie, the Qulit pendant necklace, and the Prosoma earrings in shiny gold.
I have a 10-month-old Golden Retriever named Walter, so most of my time is spent chasing after socks, car keys, remote controls, and anything else not nailed to the floor that he's managed to swipe. When we aren't exploring unbeaten paths around the Lowcountry with Walter, my husband and I enjoy seeing live music, sipping on local brews, and firing up the grill.
Fulfillment is one of the most pivotal pillars of customer experience and it is no question that the countless positive reviews we see each and every day are a reflection of Kenzie’s effort and attention to detail.
Next time you get your order on time or early, you can thank Kenzie!

We're highlighting a lesser-known, but essential step in our process - sewing. From bow ties and pocket squares to statement-making cummerbunds, many of our signature men’s silhouettes are brought to life by the Sewing Department.
For almost a year, Kourtney has been lighting up every room she enters here at Brackish. Her unmistakably bright personality is paired with passionate creativity and tedious precision in her role as Head of Sewing.
Each and every day is a new and exciting process. Since all our products are handcrafted, I am always on the edge of my seat to see what pieces I get to work on day-to-day. I spend most of my hours measuring patterns, cutting fabric, machine sewing, and hand sewing bow ties, pocket squares, and cummerbunds. I wrap up each day by adding the finishing touch, a personalized label to our products to seal the deal.
As the Head of Sewing, I touch almost every piece of fabric that goes through the company. We value quality craftsmanship and handle each item with care. I use my creative eye to ensure that every unique, handmade accessory is sewn to its utmost beautiful quality.
I enjoy piecing together our cummerbunds and seeing them come to life from start to finish. One singular cummerbund takes me around 8-10 hours to sew, but it is so magical to see the feathers transform into a beautiful, wearable piece.
That is a hard question, but I would have to say the Pheasant patterned cummerbund. The feathers have an iridescent shine to them that has an ethereal beauty. I also find our Wallace multicolor bow tie to be extraordinary. I get lost in the details of each feather and admire how each one complements the other!
I consider myself a fashion creative. I enjoy creating concepts and designs for my personal design aesthetic. I enjoy illustrating clothing collections, creating editorials, and constructing garments. Here is one of my favorite collections in my portfolio:
The attention to detail that goes into each and every step of our process is what has helped form Brackish into the successful brand it is today. While feathers are at our forefront, there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes to create a Brackish accessory.
"Our product and process is light years ahead of where it was when we started, and our breadth of expertise as it pertains to artistic craftsmanship is something that has evolved over the years," says co-founder, Jeff Plotner.
]]>Ben & Jeff at Ben's wedding wearing the first-ever feather bow ties
10 years ago, Brackish Bowties was born out of Jeff’s apartment on Rutledge Avenue with the iconic Original bow tie and a focus on men’s style. We have since expanded and evolved into a full line of men’s and women’s luxury accessories which ultimately led to the name change from Brackish Bowties to Brackish in 2021. To commemorate the 10 year anniversary, we went back to our bow tie roots and crafted a beautiful new design, appropriately named “Cheers”.
Ben & Jeff with the first collection of Brackish bow ties.
The Cheers tie is designed to honor the brand’s history, with each feather being specifically chosen for its meaning to the brand. Starting at the center knot we feature iridescent turkey, the feather that started it all. Taking its cue from the first ever bow tie that Ben created, the turkey feather is one that has a very special meaning to the brand. Working our way out you’ll find blue lady amhurst to represent the salty Atlantic Ocean of Jeff’s upbringing, white goose to mimic the shoreline where the ocean meets the land, then spotted guinea signifying the towns and treasures found throughout our beautiful state. From there we transition into green lady amhurst highlighting the rolling hills of the upstate where Ben grew up, and finally utilizing the venery pheasant to replicate the reflection of the day’s last light against the horizon.
Named simply for the celebratory nature of this tie, Cheers instantly invokes good times with family, friends, and in this case, feathers. This tie honors our roots and rejoices in the future and it is our hope that you raise a glass every time you tell the story of this tie and its name.
Today, we’re celebrating all of the incredibly talented and creative women who make up our team. We sat down with three of these women for a behind-the-scenes look at the unique ways in which they bring every Brackish piece to life.
Tav: I started at Brackish in 2017 and I am the lead of the Feather Department. My role includes leading the feather team, which is super exciting because we sort every single feather that the artisans receive. There are hundreds of categories for all of the feathers that we use, and they are all tailored to fit each product specifically so that the finished products are as consistent as possible. Although it is a challenge, it’s fun to see what cool pieces the artisans are able to turn the feathers into.
Tav, Materials Controller
Maddie: My first day at Brackish was April 1st, 2015 (April Fools Day). I love to joke that one day someone is going to say, “April Fools” and I’ll be out of a job. When I first started, I worked in almost every position in the office until I found my forever home in QC (Quality Control). It all makes sense now, considering how particular I am about things in my everyday life. QC seems to come naturally to me.
Maddie, Quality Manager
Mary: Lindsay, an artisan at Brackish who is my neighbor and friend, mentioned to me that Brackish needed a part-time gift wrapper and product boxer in November 2020. I was working in real estate at the time, which was very slow due to COVID, so why not? I could use some holiday money! I’ve always been a fan of Brackish since I saw their Original bow tie at Wine Under the Oaks in 2015 - plus my first job was as a gift wrapper at Northwoods Mall during the holidays when I was 15. Funny how things come full circle!
Fast forward to 8 months later, I was promoted to Production Administrator, a full-time position! I provide support to Artisans and Production employees to ensure efficient and timely execution of production plans. I love that I now get to work closely with almost everyone at Brackish from our amazing feather team to the fabulous ladies in shipping and everything in between!
Mary, Production Administrator
Tav: Working at Brackish has been an amazing experience thus far, and a lot of it has to do with the amazing women at the company. Most of our staff are women, and being in such a creative, women-centric environment while the company has grown so much over the years is something that I am truly proud to be a part of.
Maddie: Oddly as it has worked out, as long as I’ve been at Brackish, our team has seemed to be predominantly women. Which I find to be super cool to be surrounded by so many talented women in a workspace.
Mary: Brackish is predominantly female! Ben and Jeff obviously recognize and honor women, which I fully respect. We, at Brackish, lift each other up and work as a team.
Tav: Throughout the years, I’ve not only been able to see the growth but also been able to be a part of it - which is a huge honor. From being here during the development and launch of our first women’s collection, to being a part of growing the feather department is a huge accomplishment.
Maddie: The best way to describe watching Brackish grow over the past seven years would be (to pay homage to one of our Brackish Core Values) “Better, Better, Better”. It’s been amazing to see people try new ways of doing things every day, that end up becoming the new norm. I do believe the smallest changes make the biggest difference, and it really shows in our work from year to year.
Mary: Brackish has grown from a dozen artisans to several dozen in my time here. We released the women’s line right before I started.
Tav: Every day is exciting! Fulfilling the day-to-day needs of our amazing artisans and production team keeps me on my toes, and knowing that all the work that my team and myself put into every day is ultimately going to make a customer happy makes it all well worth it.
Maddie: I really love getting to have my hands on all of the products. Also, knowing I may be handling a product that will end up with Bill Murray or Blake Lively is pretty cool too.
Mary: Seeing what we can all accomplish together!
Tav: It’s so hard to choose! In the men’s collection, I love the Farmington. It’s such a great mesh of colors and feather types. The camouflage design is stunning, it’s truly amazing how the feathers are cut out to re-create such a familiar pattern.
The white collection in the women’s line is absolutely remarkable. Although the collection looks simple, the texture of the white feathers makes it so compelling. The design team went through a lot of trial and error to get the designs just right, and it shows
Maddie: For our Men’s Spring Collection, the Wallace bow tie is my favorite. That particular design has more of a rare blue pheasant fringe that we don’t see often, and it is one of my favorite feathers. For our Women’s Spring Collection, I have really been loving the new Pendant Necklaces. I personally love having another small, but not so subtle, accessory like this in our collection.
Mary: The Seay bow tie is gorgeous for Spring! The Dez drop earrings are so bold and beautiful with the peacock, pheasant, and guinea feathers!
Tav: When I’m not at Brackish, you can definitely find me cooking and experimenting with new recipes. I have a Frenchie, Berg, who loves a good afternoon nap (which I do as well), and on our warm Charleston summer days, I love to ride my bike on Folly to take in the lowcountry views.
Maddie: If I am being honest, probably eating out somewhere in Charleston. I am a huge foodie, to say the least. Charleston is home to so many good restaurants, I can’t keep up with all the places I want to try or go back to.
Mary: Shenanigans with my husband of 20 years, close friends and family, chauffeuring our 15 year old son to/from BCA for theater, rescuing and loving animals.

SEWE holds a special place in the hearts of us all at Brackish. It was the very first show that Brackish attended back in 2013 when our collection only featured bow ties. At our core, Brackish is, and will always be, about a deep love and respect for nature which embodies the mission of this event. Since 2017, we have developed a limited edition bow tie, designed specifically for SEWE. Throughout this time, our brand has evolved past menswear, expanding with a women’s collection that launched in 2019. For the first time ever, we will have not one, not two, but three limited edition, SEWE-inspired designs – consisting of a bow tie and two unique earring silhouettes.
When designing this exclusive collection, our team strives to keep the outdoors at the forefront of the process. In doing so, this year's spread has an inherent earthy feel. Together, moss colored goose and bobwhite quail feathers combine to create the perfect SEWE palette.
We sat down with the Brackish Designer Director, Bryn Holler, to gain insight into his creative process while designing this year's collection.
I started as an artisan at Brackish about seven years ago. During that time, I had the opportunity to help conceptualize various pieces and was immediately captivated by all of the possible designs you could create with feathers.
Both my brother and father are avid hunters. The moss green goose feathers and brown bobwhite and rooster feathers reminded me of the flannels and briar pants they prefer to hunt in. I thought this color palette perfectly represents the outdoors.
The length of my creative process all depends on how complicated and detailed the vision is for each piece. For this collection, I wanted to stick with a more simplistic design and let the colors and feathers speak for themselves. I started by choosing a combination of feathers that I felt like encompassed the outdoors and represented SEWE. After determining the feathers I wanted to use, I started designing the Estuary Bow Tie. I created two different iterations before landing on the final design. Once the bow tie was finalized, the designs for the accompanying Battery and Peninsula earrings just fell into place.
That’s a hard question to answer. I would have to say that once a design is decided on, creating a clean, well-executed piece is my favorite. Not that designing in and of itself isn’t satisfying, but nothing quite beats seeing a product in its final form.
I’ve always been a fan of cooking and baking. Just like designing feather accessories, there is a certain craft that goes along with creating a well-cooked meal or dessert. Planning out meals for the week and being able to cook for someone is very rewarding. Every once in a while I’ll break out the sewing machine, as well.
If you're wondering how to layer pendant necklaces—whether with new pieces, old favorites, or a mix of both—we have the tips and tricks to get you started and upgrade your stacking game.
The first step to layering pendant necklaces is to choose your favorite piece and build around it. Whether that be something with a pendant or a piece with a thicker chain, this statement piece will be the starting point of creating your perfect stack. From there, you can layer with different lengths, colors, and textures that complement its beauty without it losing that center stage spotlight.
To create the ultimate layering effect, you will want to first focus on choosing a variety of chain lengths. We recommend starting with 2 or 3 chain lengths that have at least a 2’’ difference. Our rectangle pendants, Tini, Quilt, and Yeol, fall at a length of 16’’ and the round pendants, Decimo, Deu, and Ahuru, fall at a length of 18’’.
The space between each chain allows each individual piece to stand out and be seen versus getting lost in each other.
When layering pendant necklaces, add textures and colors to give your stack that eye-catching look that is sure to turn heads.
The Ahuru and Yeol are crafted with guinea feathers that showcase a stunning contrast between classic black and white.
The Decimo and Qulit highlight the most luxurious part of the Peacock feather, giving you an unmistakable pop of color to your stack.
The layered cream and tan bobwhite quail feathers in the Deu and Tini are purposefully placed to create neutral-colored textures that add depth and detail to any outfit.
Once you have your stack down, pair it with your other Brackish favorites for an overall cohesive look. For a casual occasion, pair it with your go-to stud earrings such as the Gailey, Yuka, or Hiott.
For a night out, complete your look with an eye-catching statement earring like the Claudia, Anna, or Nikko Blue and a matching cuff such as the Mary Ann, Courtney, or Julie.
The ultimate secret for learning how to layer necklaces–have fun with it! There is truly no right or wrong way to showcase your jewelry so don’t overthink it. Layering necklaces is a chance to showcase your own unique style, whether that is vibrant and bold, or simple and neutral.
Earlier this year, we adjusted our identity to better-reflect the state of our work – we are Brackish. In addition, we gave our website a fresh look with features that make your shopping experience more convenient from start to finish.
Our team developed several new silhouettes to expand our women’s accessory collection. These new categories include: teardrop stud earrings, crescent earrings, grecian-inspired statement earrings and statement necklaces.
We also released our first full non-feather accessory collection – the Horseshoe Crab Collection. We went to the Brackish waters for inspiration, which led us to the unmistakable silhouette of the horseshoe crab and other low country elements.
In honor of Brackish VIP, Chelsea Oswald, we donated a portion of all sales from our new double sided hoop collection throughout the month of October to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Our pieces adorned two long-time Brackish celebrities this year. Don Cheadle sported our best-selling Guinea bow tie at the Oscars, and Cam Newton donned our Carew bow tie on the cover of Cigar Aficionado.
We were honored to have been named the 2021 Garden & Gun Made in the South Award Winner in the Style category. These awards represent a prestigious group of talented creatives among whom we are proud to have our work recognized.
Co-founders Ben and Jeff represented Brackish on the Today Show’s Small Business Marketplace in November of 2021, as co-host Craig Melvin’s featured brand of choice. We were honored by this milestone opportunity to share our story and our work.
]]>This unique year presented unforeseen opportunities for continued growth and innovation – and we believe the best is yet to come.
